Displaying Froud artwork on a personal website

If your website is strictly for personal use then you may display Froud art. However, to be within our copyrights we will need you to place a copyright notice ON the saved image. This will help maintain our copyrights if the image becomes fished into Google images, Yahoo! photo album, etc. or distributed without your knowledge. Please do the following for each Froud image used on a personal website:

  • Display our copyright information on the image itself and link that image back to worldoffroud.com.
  • The copyright notice should state as much as the following as possible: "Title of Image" is copyright (or the © symbol) "Brian/Wendy/Toby" Froud. Please visit World of Froud for more on this artist. This image may not be distributed or altered in any format.
  • At a minimum, the copyright notice MUST say: copyright (or the © symbol) "Brian/Wendy/Toby" Froud. Please visit World of Froud for more on this artist.
  • You may display up to FIVE Froud artwork images on any of your personal sites.
  • You may not link directly to images located on any official Froud website. Doing so is considered bandwidth theft and a breach of our terms of use.
  • The images may not be altered or changed in any method except to post the copyright notice on top of the image. An example of an alteration is if you flip the direction in which a faery is facing on a Froud drawing. The alteration of the original format/look is considered a break of copyrights.
  • The image itself must serve as a direct link to worldoffroud.com. Meaning if someone clicks on the image, they should always be taken directly to this website.
  • You may not post images to websites that are image exchange sites or photo albums, such as "Flickr" or "Yahoo's! photo album," as these images tend to get distributed by search engines and lose our copyright notifications.
  • You may not use a Froud artwork image and alter it to create a web background, animations, ring logo, avatar icons, website logo or other means of altering this image. Doing so is a breach of our copyrights and in some cases is considered 'commercial' usage.

Using Froud artwork as a permanent tattoo:

We love seeing Froud tattoos! We also love seeing the creativity the tattoo artist brings to a piece of Froud artwork! However, we now require that the tattoo artist gives you their design (if drawn beforehand) when your tattoo is finished. This is just to be sure that the tattoo artist does not begin selling Froud artwork as their own design as this would fall under commercial usage.

Please note, if you are a tattoo artist you are not allowed to display Froud artwork amongst your available designs as this is breaking copyrights (see under commercial usage).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Copyright?

Copyright (usually displayed as © ) is a way for us to protect our creations. Whether something is written, painted, photographed, sung, choreographed, coded- it is most likely protected by copyright (whether or not you are notified of it's copyright).

Basically copyright provides the owner of the work to have exclusive right over their work while being legally able to prevent others from doing what they will to their creations. For example, only the creator can change the look of a painting not anyone who has access to that painting.

What is Personal Use vs. Commercial Use? What is not allowed?

When we refer to personal vs. commercial we are generally referring to the reason you have created a website, pamphlet, clothing article, etc. If you were considering distributing any item that has Froud artwork on it, this would be considered commercial use. If you have a website where your primary function is to display personal information, then this would be considered a personal website.

Examples of usages that are Not Allowed:

  • Nonprofit organization websites, pamphlets, etc
  • School/Theater/Music function items
  • Corporations, small - big business items
  • Link exchange websites
  • Business logos, labels, etc.
  • Any form of written work where Froud artwork is used as illustration. Doing this implies that the Froud's have endorsed your work. This is actually illegal and you must get written permission before using Froud art in this method. (click here for more on this)

I have made a Froud background/screen saver for my personal computer. Is this allowed? Can I let visitors to my website download this background/screen saver?

Since we cannot prevent you from altering Froud artwork to display on your personal computer you may do so as long as it is not distributed via a website or any other format. Distribution of this type of item is a breach of copyrights and will not be tolerated.

Please note, that the computer backgrounds are meant for your personal computer and not as a 'website' background.

I wrote a poem/story/prose and want to use Froud artwork to illustrate my work. How is this a break in copyrights?

If you wrote a story, poem, prose, etc and used Froud artwork to illustrate your written work for personal use than this would not break copyrights. However, if you printed this document and gave it to anyone or posted this document on a website then this would be considered a distribution of your work and would no longer fall under 'personal use.'

The reason this is tricky is because your written work is also copyrighted and when you post your work along with the Froud artwork on the internet or in a pamphlet where it is no longer being seen by 'just you' it is implying that the Froud's have endorsed your work and have given permission for their work to be used as illustrations. Even if you have listed all the applicable World of Froud® copyrights, this is still illegal and you must get written permission before using Froud artwork in this method.
